BOYS

RATHDRUM — Once the heat was on, Coeur d’Alene took it right at Lakeland on Friday night.

Junior Gunner Larson and freshman Caden Symons scored 12 points each for the Vikings, who hit 5 of 9 from the 3-point line in the second quarter, pulling away for an 82-52 win over the Hawks in an Inland Empire League game at Hawk Court.

“We sped up the game a little bit in the second quarter,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “We started to force some turnovers and were able to get out in transition. I was pleased that a lot of those points came from our bench guys that don’t get a lot of playing time. Colin (Cherny) came in and scored five and we were about as balanced and we could be.”

Coeur d’Alene outscored Lakeland 28-5 in the second quarter to take a 47-19 lead at halftime.

“It was brutal and by far the worst quarter we’ve played this season,” Lakeland coach Tony Hanna said. “We did a decent job against their pressure in the first quarter and then it was five different guys coming at us from all different angles. When they weren’t hitting 3’s, they were getting steals and lay-in’s. They turned up the pressure, and we struggled with it.”

Senior Scotty Hocking scored 14 points for Lakeland (3-15, 1-6 IEL), which hosts Lake City to conclude the regular season on Tuesday.

Coeur d’Alene (13-6, 5-3) visits Moscow on Monday.

“Good solid effort; I was impressed with the defensive intensity in the first three quarters,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “Wasn’t really impressed with the fourth quarter; I just thought we weren’t focused on the agenda at hand.”

Winger praised the defense of Nathan Hocking on Parker Childs, Sandpoint’s top scorer, who finished with three points.

“And the dam broke loose,” Jaguars coach Lon Morast said. “Their quickness wore us out toward the end. I was proud of how my kids battled for three quarters. They (the Knights) can score really quickly, and they did.”

Both teams are idle until the 1A Division I District 1 tournament. Genesis Prep plays Wallace on Feb. 21, with the winner playing Lakeside on Feb. 23 for the district title and lone berth to state.
