PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL STATE PLAY-IN GAMES: Lake City falls to Eagle; Kellogg also loses

LEWISTON — After beating Eagle by 18 points two months ago, Saturday was a completely different story for Lake City.

The Timberwolves were limited to four field goals in the second half, three of them 3-pointers in a 48-39 loss to the Eagle Mustangs in a state 5A play-in game on Saturday at Lewiston High.

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well today for whatever reason,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “Eagle played hard and took away some things we wanted to do.”

Lake City beat Eagle 57-39 at Eagle on Dec. 3.

“They had a big run in the second quarter and we really didn’t get in the flow,” said Anderson, in his sixth year as coach. “We really kind of struggled today. For whatever reason, we got clean looks and they didn’t go in the first half. Then we got a little nervous and didn’t get those looks in the second half.”

Lake City, which took third at state last year, finished 19-6.

“We’ve got a lot coming back,” Anderson said. “We’ve got a big offseason and we’ll see how it goes next year.”

Paige Cofer scored 10 points for Eagle (14-12), which opens at state against top-seeded Coeur d’Alene (21-2) on Thursday at 6 p.m. PST at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.

LEWISTON — The Archers of Meridian advanced to the state tournament with a win over the Wildcats in a state 2A play-in game at Lewiston High.

Kellogg, which qualified for state last year for the first time since 2010, finished 10-14. The Wildcats dropped from the 3A classification this season.

Ambrose (17-9) will be the seventh seed at state and open against second-seeded Soda Springs (20-4) on Thursday at Bishop Kelly High in Boise.
