It was a whirlwind week for the Hot Springs boys and girls basketball teams, with each team playing three games in three nights to wind up their regular season schedules.

The Lady Savage Heat won a pair of their games, beating Troy at home 47-38 this past Saturday after opening their triad of games Thursday night, also at home, with a 45-17 win over Alberton.

In between those games, the girls lost on the road to perennial power Drummond, 63-17.

The boys also played the same schedule with slightly different results.

Hot Springs’ boys began the weekly schedule with a 45-31 home win over Alberton, then fell to Drummond in a road game, 57-22. The Savage Heat closed out the week with another narrow loss, dropping a 60-55 home game in overtime versus Troy Saturday evening.

The Savage Heat boys versus Troy was a back-and-forth event, with Hot Springs eking out a 10-9 lead after the first eight minutes of play. Troy then turned up its defensive efforts and outscored the home team 10-2 in quarter number two to take a 19-12 lead at the half.

Hot Springs rallied in the third quarter and moved to within two points of the lead, 33-31 heading into the final period of regulation. The Savage Heat outscored Troy 17-15 in the fourth quarter to square the score at 48 each and send the game into overtime.

Troy won the overtime period 12-7 to close out the game and the regular season for both teams, who now head to their respective conference district tournaments.

Hot Springs boys will travel to Polson Thursday where they will take on Western 14C three seed Two Eagle River at 3:45 pm. Troy’s boys open their Western 7B postseason tonight (Tuesday) in Thompson Falls versus the Blue Hawks.

The Savage Heat finished the regular season with a 4-14 record and a 3-11 14C mark.

Friday night in their road game encounter with Drummond, the Heat fell behind early and never caught up with the now 14-4 Trojans.

Drummond owned a 17-4 record at the end of the first quarter, then outscored Hot Springs 16-2 in the second stanza for a 36-6 halftime lead. The Trojans added to their lead in the second half as they coasted to the home win.

Hot Springs began their week Thursday with the home win over win-less Alberton.

The Heat opened a 13-5 first quarter lead, then continued to control the out-manned Panthers en route to a 32-13 lead at the half.

Alberton rallied in the fourth quarter, showing the never-quit attitude they have had most of this, the first year of varsity sports for the Mineral County team. The Panthers out-pointed the Heat 14-7 but could not overcome the earlier hole they were in.

Quincy Styles-Depoe paced the Heat with 10 points, while sophomore Nick McAllister added nine to the Heat’s win.

The Lady Savage Heat, who open 14C District play Thursday versus St. Regis, closed out their week and regular season with the home win over Troy, which wrapped up its regular season without a victory on the year.

Hot Springs took control in the opening minutes of the game, outscoring Troy 11-1 in the first quarter on their way to a comfortable 21-20 halftime advantage.

Troy managed to trim two points of the Lady Heat’s halftime lead over the final two quarters of play but they could not overtake the home team.

Hot Springs had three players score in double figures against the Lady Trojans, led by Jose Uski’s 18 points. They also got 11 points from senior Lily DeTienne and 10 from freshman Kara Christensen as they recorded their sixth win of the year.

Friday evening in Drummond it was Hot Springs that fell behind to the powerful Lady Trojans, who grabbed a 25-5 first quarter lead and never trailed the rest of the way.

After trading baskets in the second quarter, Drummond outscored the Lady Heat 29-3 in the second half to roll to win number 16 on the year.

Uski once again led Hot Springs with nine points.

Hot Springs began their three-game week with a convincing win over the Alberton girls on the Lady Heat home court.

The Lady Heat jumped out to 10-1 lead after the first eight minutes of play, then played even up with the Lady Panthers in the second frame which ended in a 16-7 Hot Springs lead.

Hot Springs took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 21-5 to build what proved to be an insurmountable lead.

Uski paced the Lady Heat with 15 points, while DeTienne added 10 for the home team.

The Lady Heat open District 14C play with a game against St. Regis, set for Thursday at 10:45 a.m. in Polson.
