Local Boy Scouts want to help businesses show American pride while bolstering their fundraising efforts.

Members of Troop 3213, based at the Post Falls Boys and Girls Club, are asking Post Falls businesses to participate in their U.S. flag program. For $60 a year, Scouts will post flags at participating businesses for 12 holidays throughout the calendar year.

"They sign up for their duty on the holiday,” Troop 3213 Scoutmaster Scott Gardner said Wednesday. "What it helps them do is provide the funds they need to do summer camps. They also use the funds for scouting equipment — a tent, a backpack, a knife, hiking boots."

Gardner said, like everything else, Scouting has become more expensive in recent years. Summer camps cost as much as $500 per Scout.

He said the hopes are to have requests for flag service by March 1. Costs will be prorated to align with when businesses register for the program.

Through this service, Scouts learn proper flag etiquette, community involvement and good citizenship. The troop is fully involved in the community year round. Scouts participate in the Post Falls Adopt-A-Street program by picking up trash on the roadways and conduct the “Scouting for Food” food collection in the fall to benefit the Post Falls Food Bank. The Scouts also have fun camping, hiking, rafting and adventuring while learning how to be good stewards of natural resources.

To support Troop 3213 and sign up for the flag service, email Gardner at postfallstroop213@gmail.com or call 208-699-4679.

Cruising around a tall pine with a small measuring tape, Ava Stone examined the numbers and wrote them down on a paper secured to her clipboard. "It's the diameter, and then you take a clinometer from the 66 foot back and then the 100 foot back, then you look up and get the height to find out the board foot volume," she said Thursday morning.
