PREP WRESTLING: Lakeland wins 14th 4A Region 1 title in 15 years

MOSCOW — After a one-year hiatus, the 4A Region 1 championship is back in the familiar halls of Lakeland High, which finished with six individual championships at Bear Den, winning the program’s 14th regional title in the last 15 years on Friday.

“It definitely feels good to bring it back where it belongs,” first-year Lakeland coach Will Edelblute said. “Overall, we had a good tournament with a lot of pins.”

Caleb Adams (98), Jaren Knopp (106), Matt Williams (120), Kaleb Hammer (132), Dylan Scott (170) and Devon Howell (220) won titles for Lakeland, which finished with 408 points.

“We had some guys that stepped up and wrestled really well,” said Edelblute, who lost senior Preston Jeffs for the season with a shoulder injury at the North Idaho Rumble in late January. “We had some guys step up and take care of business. Even our guys on the consolation side, they never stopped wrestling and fought their hardest.”

The top two seeds, with a wild card available, advance to the state 4A tournament starting Thursday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.

Trojan Piper win titles

at regional tourney

MOSCOW — Coeur d’Alene senior Alyssa Randles (126 pounds) and junior Cara Brown (152), as well as Post Falls senior Abigale Piper (145) won girls District 1-2 titles on Friday at Bear Den.

Randles won district and state titles last year, the first year the Idaho High School Activities Association sponsored a state tournament.

"Cara wrestled well today — the best I've seen her wrestle all year, in the finals," Coeur d'Alene assistant coach Tony Hook said. "Alyssa (ranked second in the nation at 127) just does what Alyssa does. She's a worker; it doesn't matter who the girl is she's wrestling."

Randles won all three of her matches by pin.

Piper took second at state last year.

"She’s been dominant, beaten everybody in her bracket already," Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. "She’s just a hard worker and a tough kid, and she loves the sport."

Lake City qualified its first two girls to state in school history — Alexxis Johnson (120) and Madison Cook (132). Both finished second.

"I'm feeling really good about their chances of being state placers," Lake City assistant coach Nathan DeLeon said.

The top two wrestlers in each weight, with a wild card available for third-place finishers, advanced to the state tournament starting Thursday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
