PREP WRESTLING: Post Falls captures ninth straight regional title

COEUR d’ALENE — Led by nine individual champions, the Post Falls Trojans won their ninth straight 5A Region 1 championship Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High.

Post Falls totaled 504 points. Coeur d’Alene was second with 319.

Rider Seguine (106), Ethan Wilson (120), Tyson Barnhart (132), Damian Hamilton (145), Seth Martin (152), John Rudebaugh (160), Jose Laguna (170), Gentry Smith (195) and Trevor Miller (220) won regional titles for the Trojans, who qualified 22 wrestlers to state next week, with a chance of up to three more earning wild cards.

The top three placers in each weight advance to state, with the fourth-place finishers considered for wild cards, to be determined at the state seeding meeting today.

“We were hoping to qualify 20-25 guys,” said Post Falls coach Pete Reardon, whose squad finished third at state last year.

In particular, Reardon praised Wilson, who pinned Will Rossi of Coeur d’Alene in the finals; Hamilton, who won by pin in the finals, and Rudebaugh, who won by technical fall.

Coeur d’Alene had two regional champions — Justus Peregrina (98) and Dax Larsen (138).

All told, the young Viking team qualified 14 for state.

“We wrestled well today, probably the best we’ve wrestled all year,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “If you’d told me at the beginning of the year we’d get 14 to state, I would have said you were crazy. The day before regionals, I was hoping for 10.”

Moffat had praise for senior Zack Wenglikowski (160), injured most of the last two years, but earned a trip to state on Saturday by finishing third.

“He had a great tournament today,” Moffat said. “Were proud of the way we wrestled today. We don’t have a lot of firepower, but we stepped up our game. We qualified only two less guys than last year. These guys came leaps and bounds.”

Lake City produced two regional champs in Zach Macdonald (113) and Garrett Leonard (182).

Three others are in the hunt for wild cards.

“Garrett had a tough road; he had to beat two state placers,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “He just wrestled solid, just wrestled mistake-free today.”

As for Macdonald, a state champion last year …

“He had one scary moment where he gave up a reversal in the finals,” Owen said. “He’s always in shaky situations, but he always finds a way on top.”

State is Thursday through Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.

Kellogg, St. Maries

finish 1-2 at districts

POTLATCH — In its first year in 2A after dropping down from 3A, Kellogg won the 2A District 1-2 tournament on Saturday with 384 points.

St. Maries, winners of 8 out of 9 district titles from 2013-21, was second with 252.

Clearwater Valley, last year’s district champ, was third with 217.

Chase Scribner (106), Kolter Wood (126) and Jaeger Hall (132) won district titles for Kellogg.

Trey Gibson won at 170 for St. Maries.

Fourth-place Priest River had four champions — Hayden Sorbel (113), Colm McLaimtaig (120), Caeden McLaimtaig (138) and Matyus McLain (220).

State is Thursday through Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
