Whitworth College just got faster.

The Spokane school also got a lot more when Superior High School senior Isabella Pereira signed her name to a letter of intent scholarship awarded for her talent and effort in track and field, particularly the 100 meter dash.

Pereira, who is expected to challenge for the state B/C title in the 100 this coming Spring, said she is looking forward to the challenge at the next level.

“I just liked the school, the program and the coaches there,” she said. “I think it will be a good place for me”.

She said she liked the school’s math department and plans to major in the field when she enrolls this Fall, bringing her Honor Roll scholarly talents to the school as well.

The 5’3” point guard on the school’s District championship basketball team will also participate in some jumping events, most notably the triple jump.

“Isabella is a prime example of what hard work and effort can produce,” said Superior principal Logan Labbe during the signing ceremony in Superior.

Those comments were echoed by girls basketball coach Jeff Schultz who told the group of students, educators and parents who filled the schools lunch room for the signing, “if you are a student who would like to try sports but have never tried them before, Isabella is a prime example of what you may be able to do if you get out and try”.

Pereira, who has been a key player in the Lady Bobcats basketball playoff run this season, will do track and field for Superior again this year.

The Cats beat Charlo for the District 14C championship this past weekend and are next headed to the Divisional tournament round in Butte this Thursday through Saturday.

And although she is also an exceptional athlete on the basketball court, Pereira said she will stick to track and field alone when she gets to Whitworth. She chose Whitworth from a field of six scholarship offers.
