STATE HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: Post Falls on Meridian's heels ... Loaiza's strong start gets Trojans to second after first day
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 year, 10 months AGO
NAMPA — In state tournaments, to get where a team wants to go, someone has to do something a little extraordinary.
Thursday was Post Falls freshman Logan Loaiza’s day.
Loaiza earned two pins, including an upset of third-seeded Parker Newby of Timberline to advance to tonight’s semifinal round.
“He doesn’t have a ton of experience at state, but to go in and get two pins says a lot about his character,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “It’s going to be an interesting day on Friday. It’s really going to tell the tale of the tournament with all the consolation rounds.”
Consolation rounds in all classifications begin today at 8 a.m. PST, with championship semifinals at 4:30 tonight.
"It's going to be an interesting dynamic," Reardon said. "We're going to have to have those wrestle back guys ready to rock first thing, because there's a lot of points to be had there."
Rider Seguine (106 pounds), Tyson Barnhart (132), Trey Smith (145), Seth Martin (152), John Rudebaugh (160), Jose Laguna (170), Gentry Smith (195) and Trevor Miller (220) advanced to the semifinals for Post Falls, which is second with 115.5 points.
Meridian, trying for its third-straight 5A title, leads with 119.5 points.
"We figured it was going to be close," Reardon said of the team race. "It's hard to say where the points were going to be, but so far, it's going according to plan."
5A: Coeur d’Alene Dax Larsen advanced to the semifinals at 138 pounds for the Vikings.
“Dax wrestled really well to get into the semifinals,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Our youth kind of showed a bit in some other weights. The kids tried, but next year, hopefully they’re another year told and more experienced.”
Coeur d’Alene senior Alyssa Randles (126) and junior Cara Brown (152) also advanced for the Viking girls, who are fifth with 25.5 points. Post Falls senior Abigale Piper also advanced to the semifinals at 145.
“The girls wrestled really well today,” Moffat said. “They came to wrestle. Alyssa is just so experienced and Cara’s not going to get rattled either. They were ready to go today.”
Lake City senior Zach Macdonald (113 pounds) and sophomore Garrett Leonard (182) advanced to the semifinals for the Timberwolves, who are tied for 13th with 19.5 points.
“Both Zach and Garrett wrestled great today,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Zach went out and crushed his first opponent and was super dominant in his quarterfinal. Garrett wrestled a really intelligent match in the quarterfinals and did all the right things to make it happen and didn’t make any mistakes. Which is something you’ve got to do at this level.”
4A: Lakeland advanced four to the quarterfinals, but went 0-4 in those matches on the first day in the 4A tournament.
Defending champion Minico leads with 119.5 points.
3A: South Fremont, in search of its fourth-straight team title, leads with 113.5 points after the first day.
Wyatt Carey (98 pounds), Paul Sundstrom (113), Stryker Huston (120) and Luke Schell (182) advanced to the semifinals for Timberlake, which is ninth with 44 points.
2A: St. Maries is tied for 24th after the first day, with New Plymouth leading defending champion Ririe 94-77 for the team title.
