PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Kellogg on to state for first time since 2020

GRANGEVILLE — The Luna twins combined for 40 points as the Kellogg Wildcats beat the New Plymouth Pilgrims 53-47 in a state 2A play-in game Saturday at Grangeville High.
Kolby Luna scored 23 points, Riply Luna 17 for Kellogg (18-7), which advanced to the state 2A tournament this week at Capital High in Boise. The Wildcats will be the No. 6 seed and play third-seeded Cole Valley Christian (19-5) in their first-round game Thursday at 1 p.m. PST.
Kellogg qualified for state for the first time since 2020.
“It feels really good,” third-year Kellogg coach Mike Martin. “These kids, the seniors, i've had three years with them now, and the work they’ve done to get us back has been awesome. And the support from the community has been incredible.”
Kolby Luna hit 5 of 10 3-pointers, Riply two 3s for Kellogg, which finished with 10 3s, seven in the first half.
“We saw on film New Plymouth likes to run a matchup zone, so we tried to get the twins to spots on the floor where they could operate in space,” Martin said.
Heath Jarboe led New Plymouth (19-7) with 11 points. But it was a hard-earned 11, Martin said, thanks to the defense of Colton Maciosek.
“Our guys see it all the time in practice; he’s the guy getting under other guys’ skins,” Martin said. “And to see him do it against the other team., I wouldn’t want to see it for sure.
“And Luke Miller, the amount of ball pressure he’s able to apply,, he gave their guards fits.
“Big shoutout to my coaching staff; we put in a couple things in our walk-through (Friday) that we hadn't done all season.”
