PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene takes the long road to victory in Rollie Lane tuneup
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 years AGO
• WRESTLING
MERIDIAN — Coeur d’Alene wrestling coach Jeff Moffat wanted to see what his team was capable of after getting off the bus after a long bus ride and competing.
Then, the ride got longer, and longer.
Coeur d’Alene was 25 miles outside of the Tri-Cities when the Vikings were informed that Interstate 84 between Pendleton, Ore., and La Grande was closed due to high winds.
Instead of waiting for it to re-open, the Vikings rerouted back to Lewiston, then traveled the remainder of the way down U.S. 95, arriving just before the scheduled start time of the match at Rocky Mountain.
“We knew we’d make it, but there was a point when we didn’t know if we’d get there for the dual,” Moffat said. “We pushed it back an hour, but we wanted to test the team. We wanted to see if we could get off the bus and compete, and I was really happy with how they performed and wrestled.”
The Vikings won five matches and beat the Grizzlies 43-33 on Thursday.
Rocco White (98 pounds), Will Rossi (120), Dax Larsen (138), Gabe Grassel (170) and Ty Paulin (182) won by pin for Coeur d’Alene.
Tanner George won by major decision at 113 and Alyssa Randles won at 120 for Coeur d’Alene, which competes in the annual Rollie Lane Invitational at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa, which begins today at 8 a.m. PST.
“It feels like we’re turning the corner a little bit,” Moffat said. “I was just happy we didn’t get off the bus and lay an egg. When you can travel 10 hours and beat a good team, I was really happy with that.”
