Milender, Vulles and Milender sounds like a great name for a law firm.
In this case, it’s the “firm” wrestling skills of Decker Milender, Chandon Vulles and eighth-grader Turner Milender who are making their case for coach Charlie Crabb and his Superior Bobcat wrestling team.
While Decker and Chandon have been busy winning wrestling meets, junior partner Turner has emerged as a rising talent in the Bobcats' ever strengthening bid for post-season honors.
Decker, who earlier this year took home first place honors at the prestigious Bob Kinney Invitational in the 126 pound category, added top honors this past Saturday at the Cut Bank Booster Invitational to his impressive season resume.
Decker captured the top prize with a 10-8 UTB (ultimate tie-breaker) victory over Conrad’s Logan Van Dyke as he ran his season record to 14-1. Van Dyke entered the match with a 24-2 individual record so far this year.
Meanwhile Vulles, wrestling in the 285-pound (heavyweight) division, captured his second individual title of the year in Cut Bank by pinning hometown wrestler Ethan Sullivan at the 3:02 mark. The win upped Vulles’ record for the year to 15-2.
The pleasant surprise for the Bobcats, who finished third in the team standings, came from Turner, the latest in the Milender sports family line to Superior’s sports efforts.
Turner, wrestling at 152 pounds, captured the second place medal at 152 pounds, his only loss of the tournament being the finals where he was pinned by Jefferson High’s John Armstrong, a senior who ran his season mark to 24-3 with the fall in 2:40.
Four other Bobcats finished in the top six at Cut Bank, as Superior finished an impressive third in the team standings among the field of more than 20 strong wrestling schools. Superior piled up 156.5 team points, trailing only team title winner Havre (252.0), and second-place Jefferson (200.5)
The Bobcats nosed out fourth place Cut Bank (153.0).
Thompson Falls’ standout Eli Ratliff paced his team to an 11th place team finish with his second-place showing in the 160-pound division.
Ratliff, who also finished first at the Bob Kinney meet, suffered his first loss of the year, falling to Lewistown’s Wyatt Elam by a narrow 8-7 score in a match tie-breaker. Ratliff is now a sparkling 18-1 on the year.
The Blue Hawks earned 87 team points in Cut Bank.
In addition to the Milender brothers and Vulles, the Bobcats got a third-place finish from junior Micah Acker at 120 pounds; and two sixth place medals from Lucas Kovalsky at 145 pounds and Jaxson Green, 205 pounds, while Caleb Pearce finished fifth in the heavyweight bracket.
Next up for Superior wrestlers is the Jug Beck Invitational this coming weekend in Missoula. Thompson Falls takes to the mats this Friday and Saturday at the Choteau Invitational.
