It was a good weekend for the Plains/Hot Springs combined wrestling team.
The PHS squad used some solid depth throughout their line-up to rack up a 4-1 team record in the Western Montana Duals Invitational this past Friday and Saturday in Ronan.
What makes their showing more impressive is that every team that finished above their fifth place team showing is a Class A or higher school.
Equally as impressive is the fact they placed six wrestlers in the top six medalists in individual weight classes as they amassed 87.5 team points.
That total was behind only team titleist Columbia Falls, which had 235.5 points, second-place Frenchtown (224.0), third place Ronan (172.5) and fourth place Libby (157.5).
In the duals portion of the event, which pits one team against another, Plains/Hot Springs (Savage Horsemen?) defeated three other teams, losing only to Libby by a 59-18 score. Along the way the Savage Horsemen defeated Glacier High (Kalispell) 49-18; Browning 42-30, and Hamilton 48-28.
In the individual contests, the PHS team picked up one third place finish, one fourth, two fifths and a sixth-place medal.
Leading the way was 126-pounder Jacob Schulze, who pinned William Chiavarini of Stevensville in the first round of their 3rd place match.
The Plains/Hot Springs team also got a fourth-place finish from Hot Springs student John Waterbury at 132 pounds. Fifth place honors went to 113-pounder Gavin Schrenk, and 145-pounder Mason Elliot, while Brady Schrenk finished sixth in the 160-pound category.
Plains/Hot Springs travels to Fairfield this Thursday for the Fairfield Mixer, then heads to Choteau for the Friday/Saturday Choteau Invitational.
