Hayden city staff will present conceptual plans for a roundabout at the intersection of Atlas Road and Hayden Avenue during an open-house-style public hearing 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Hayden City Hall.

Exhibits available for review will include early concept sketches of a roundabout, perspectives and some relevant data.

The Hayden city clerk, Abbi Sanchez, will gather feedback from attendees on the concept design.

City Engineer Rob Wright, Public Works Director Alan Soderling and representatives from Welch Comer, Melissa Cleveland and Adam Dorsey, will be available at the forum to answer any questions or concerns on the roundabout.

Welch Comer is the engineering company that designed the concepts for the city.

Sanchez will compile written or oral comments for a report that will be presented to the city council and used to guide the ultimate decisions to approve or disapprove construction.

Lakewood Construction on the southwest side of the intersection and United Crown Pump and Drilling to the northeast will be the businesses most affected by the proposal.

“I go to that intersection every single day, and it can be a busy intersection,” said Jack Harper, owner of Lakewood Construction. “But that roundabout is so big and so oversized, and by having it there it would cut our operating room in our gravel driveway in half. It’s really overkill and it would screw up our operations.”

Harper leases the land for his construction business, and the roundabout will be oriented predominantly on his lot, so he plans to attend the open house.

United Crown’s owners Trisha and Richard Agueros will also likely attend to see the most current drafts of the proposal before they comment whether they support the roundabout.

The Hayden and Atlas intersection is one of many targeted by the city’s capital improvement plan as sites of future congestion.

There are multiple intersections along Hayden Avenue that will likely be deficient by 2040, according to the city transportation plan, and must be improved in order to maintain traffic quality standards.

Hayden Avenue is considered a minor artery for the airport as the city develops, and is included in neighboring city’s transportation plans, like Rathdrum.

Hayden residents are invited to attend the open house.
