PREP BASKETBALL: Lakeland pushes past Moscow in IEL matchup

MOSCOW — In a true battle in the second half, Lakeland turned to its captain to bring it home when it counted on Friday.

Lakeland sophomore Landree Simon finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Hawks, who outscored Moscow 12-4 in the third quarter en route to a 42-36 win in an Inland Empire League game at Bear Den.

“Landree played each minute and doesn’t get enough recognition for how hard she plays by me,” Lakeland coach Tyrel Derrick said. “She just battled and fought on each possession tonight. I’m just so proud of them for the way they played tonight.”

Lila Kiefer scored seven for Lakeland (8-6, 1-5 IEL), which switched to a man-to-man defense in the second half.

“Karstyn (Kiefer) came in and did a good job of disrupting them,” Derrick said. “Lila was able to get downhill and it allowed us to get up and down the court a little faster in the second half.”

Kennedy Thompson and Maya Anderson scored 11 points each for Moscow (5-12, 0-5).

Lakeland hosts Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

PLUMMER — All it took was a few shots to fall, and Lakeside’s Tyson Charley got all the confidence he might have needed.

Charley scored 12 of his 26 points in the third quarter for the Knights, who beat the Wampus Cats in a nonleague game at Ron Miller Court.

“He’s getting more confident with each game,” Lakeside coach James Twoteeth said. “He had a couple of games where he wasn’t finishing. He’s been up and down like a freshman can be, but he’s playing really well right now. For him to get some confidence in a game like this, it just helps us in the long run.”

Vander Brown scored 28 points for Lakeside (6-2), which hosts Garfield-Palouse today.
