MEN
PENDLETON, Ore. — Xavier Bailey and Jeremiah Sibley made big-time contributions as North Idaho College, ranked No. 1 in the Northwest Athletic Conference coaches poll, eked out a 94-92 victory over Blue Mountain Community College in NWAC play Monday.
“We didn’t play our best basketball, but we battled it down the stretch, and found a way to pull it off,” NIC coach Corey Symons said.
After former Lewiston High standout Kash Lang scored on a driving layup to put Blue Mountain (9-6, 2-2 NWAC) up 76-74 with five seconds left, NIC (17-0, 5-0) took it the length of the floor, and had the ball knocked out of bounds with two seconds left. Bailey set a screen and slipped open for a 6-foot fadeaway at the buzzer to force overtime.
In the extra session, Bailey’s basket with 27 seconds left gave NIC a 91-90 lead. The Cardinals forced a turnover, and Symons inserted Jeremiah Sibley into the game for the first time. Sibley was fouled and hit two free throws for a three-point lead with 12 seconds left.
Defending against the 3, NIC allowed a dunk with three seconds left. Bailey hit 1 of 2 free throws with three seconds left. Blue Mountain tried a deep pass, intercepted by Brendan Johnson at the buzzer.
“We’re always preaching, whether you’re going to play 30 minutes or three seconds, be ready when your name is called,” Symons said. “He (Sibley) literally played three seconds.”
Cobi Campbell led NIC with 21 points.
Chad Napoleon scored a game-high 22 for Blue Mountain, and Lang added 15.
NIC plays Community Colleges of Spokane on Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College.
