The Noxon girls basketball team got a pair of wins this past week, thanks to some solid play against struggling opponents. Thursday the girls beat Two Eagle River 51-33 at home, then took care of winless Alberton 50-19 in Alberton.
The boys, meanwhile, lost to Two Eagle River, 55-37, then beat Alberton 56-21 Saturday night in Alberton.
The girls got off to a good start against the Lady Eagles, rolling to an 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Two Eagle began finding some shooting range in the second quarter and trimmed the Noxon lead to 21-18 at the half.
Throughout the contest, the Lady Eagles had no answer for Noxon’s senior forward Emily Brown, who scored a game-best 30 points on the night. Brown scored 18 of her 30 in the second half, helping keep Two Eagle River from mounting any serious rallies with her scoring and defense.
Noxon continued to pour on the points in the second half, outscoring the Lady Eagles 12-4 in the third quarter and 18-11 in the final period to secure the win.
Saturday night in Alberton, Noxon raced out to a 16-8 lead against the Lady Panthers, who are looking for their first win this season, their first season playing varsity basketball in several years.
The two teams played even-up in the second quarter as Noxon took a 24-12 lead at the half. With Brown and company controlling the backboards and the Lady Red Devil defense wreaking havoc with the Alberton offense, Noxon rolled to an 18-2 third quarter advantage to take a 42-14 lead heading into the final quarter.
Noxon outscored the host team 8-5 in the fourth as they coasted to the win.
For the Noxon boys, the game with Two Eagle River was a different story and outcome than the girls contest.
Two Eagle scratched out a 14-9 lead after one quarter of play, then watched as Noxon fought back to put the score at 25-22 in favor of the Eagles heading into halftime.
From that point on, Two Eagle River outscored Noxon 30-15 in the second half to lift their Western 14C conference mark to 3-1 and their overall mark to 6-3. The loss dropped the young Red Devils to 1-4 in league play and 1-6 on the year.
Saturday night in Alberton Noxon was looking for a rebound win and got one, and more as they swamped the Panthers on their home court.
Noxon jumped out to a dominating 18-0 first quarter lead. Alberton fought back gamely in the second period when each team scored 11 to make it 29-11 at halftime.
Noxon, which got 11 points each from Justice Kaiser and Ricky Williams, put the game out of reach by outscoring Alberton 18-8 in quarter number three, then adding to that lead in the fourth to wrap up their second win of the year.
Noxon has a pair of crucial conference road games this week as they journey to Hot Springs Friday night and St. Regis Saturday evening.
