PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lake City deals Post Falls first loss

COEUR d’ALENE — The Lake City Timberwolves handed the Post Falls Trojans their first loss of the season in dominating fashion Tuesday night.

Lake City jumped out to a 21-4 lead and buried Post Falls 72-42 in Inland Empire League play.

“I think the kids were just anxious to get the taste out of their mouth after the Fish game,” said Lake City coach James Anderson, whose team lost 54-41 at Coeur d’Alene last Friday in the Fight for the Fish spirit game. “We didn’t put our best foot forward there, and we knew we were capable of more. We probably talked less in the locker room (before the game) than we ever had. I told them I wanted them to get back to being us, and have fun and enjoy it, and think less, and they did a good job responding.”

Junior Sophia Zufelt tossed in 23 points and junior Avery Waddington added 21 for Lake City (14-3, 5-1 IEL), ranked fifth in 5A in this week’s media poll.

In addition to its defense, Lake City drove to the basket well in the first half, and drove and kicked for 3s in the second half.

Brooklyn Brennan scored 12 points for fourth-ranked Post Falls (17-1, 5-1), which trailed 39-14 at the half.

“We made them look pretty good,” Post Falls coach Brian Hall said of Lake City. “We came out pretty rough; they came out strong, and we didn’t. It was basically us throwing the ball to them, and we missed a lot of shots, because we jittery, because it was Lake City, and they’re a tough team. It was eye-opening, and it was probably a good thing for us, to show us that we’re not invincible.”

“They’re known for their transition; they like to get the ball out quick and run the floor,” Anderson said. “So we weren’t sure how much we would be able to get into that (pressure), but we slowly worked into it, and they were having problems with it, so we stuck with it.”

On Friday, Post Falls plays host to Coeur d’Alene, and Lake City is home vs. Lewiston.

LEWISTON — Senior Madi Symons scored 15 of her game-high 24 points in the second half as the Vikings beat the Bengals in an Inland Empire League game at Lewiston High.

Junior Teagan Colvin scored 19, junior Madison Mitchell seven for Coeur d’Alene, which hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter to jump out to a 21-9 lead.

Coeur d’Alene (14-2, 5-0 IEL) travels to Post Falls on Friday.

Zoe Kessinger scored 13 for Lewiston (5-12, 2-5), which travels to Lake City on Friday.

RATHDRUM — Junior Payton Sterling scored 21 points, hitting 7 of 11 from the 3-point line, to send the Hawks past the Badgers in a nonleague game at Hawk Court.

“Payton had a pretty good night tonight,” Lakeland coach Tyrel Derrick said. “She’s been a little up and down this year, but put a really fun game together tonight. She was really confident in shooting the ball and it was fun to be in the gym while she was doing it.”

Junior Lila Kiefer added 11, sophomore Landree Simon 14 for Lakeland (9-6), which faces Sandpoint in the Battle for the Paddle spirit game at Les Rogers Court on Friday.

“The girls really ratcheted up the defensive pressure in the second quarter and got some transition baskets,” Derrick said. “Lila did a great job of getting us some quality shots to really put the game away.”
