PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Big second quarter lifts Coeur d'Alene past Post Falls

POST FALLS — Trailing by four points after one quarter, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings picked up the pressure and changed the complexion of the game.

Coeur d’Alene outscored Post Falls 25-10 in the second quarter and went on to beat the Trojans 62-50 in Inland Empire League play Friday night at The Arena.

“They’re very good in the half court, so we went to full-court pressure, and sped them up,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said.

Logan Orchard had 11 of his 15 points in the second quarter for Coeur d’Alene (11-4, 3-1 IEL).

“I believe we had seven turnovers in the second quarter,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “We gave up 25 points; completely unacceptable. Orchard’s really good on top of that press, he was baiting us into bad passes, with his basketball IQ and athleticism.”

Alexander Nipp scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter for Coeur d’Alene.

“Alexander Nipp played his tail off; I don’t think they had an answer for him,” Adams said.

“He did a good job establishing position, taking his time and scoring around the basket,” McLean said. “Coeur d’Alene has a lot of offensive weapons; they create a lot of problems.”

Caden Symons hit two of his three 3-pointers in the second quarter, and finished with 13 points for the Vikings.

“It was a good win; they’re a much better team than their record,” Adams said of Post Falls. “I think they get up for playing us.”

Tyras Blake hit four 3s and led Post Falls (2-14, 0-4) with 16 points.

“He (Blake) did a good job moving without the ball, using screens to get open,” McLean said. “That was one of his best games.”

Neil McCarthy added 14 points for Post Falls, and Cooper Craig had six points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.

The teams meet again Thursday at Coeur d’Alene.

COEUR d’ALENE — Kolton Mitchell scored 23 points as the Timberwolves, ranked No. 1 in 5A, beat the visiting Bengals in Inland Empire League play.

“He played his tail off, they harassed him pretty good,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “He was solid on both ends of the floor.”

Blake Buchanan added 15 points for Lake City (13-0, 3-0 IEL).

“Defensively we played pretty well, defended in the half-court well,” Winger said. “Offense was just kind blah; we just didn’t seem to have the same energy or giddy-up. The thing I was most disappointed with was the third quarter; we’ve been a great third quarter team, and we came out sleepwalking and played a poor third quarter and that was disappointing.”

Carson Way scored 15 points for Lewiston (10-4, 3-2).

SANDPOINT — Senior Scotty Hocking scored 20 of his game-high 33 points in the first half for the Hawks, who held off the Bulldogs in an Inland Empire League game at Les Rogers Court.

“Scotty really got us going and had a good all-around game,” Lakeland coach Tony Hanna said. “Our defense played great from the start with Kenton (Ferguson) doing a great job on (Parker) Childs. We were able to get one of their bigs in foul trouble. It was great timing and what we’ve been waiting for all year.”

In the spirit competition, Lakeland won the Paddle.

Ben Ryan scored 13 points for Lakeland (3-10, 1-2 IEL), which hosts Moscow next Friday.

“I was really impressed with Lakeside’s pressure defense and guards,” Bonners Ferry coach Nathan Williams said. “It was a really good test for us. Lakeside shot the ball really well and finished at the basket. They’re well coached and did a great job.”

Freshman Tyson Charley scored 21 points for Lakeside, which hosts Wallace on Tuesday.
