PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lakeland falls to Sandpoint on free throw at :00

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint guard Aliya Strock made the second of two free throws with no time remaining to send the Sandpoint Bulldogs over the Lakeland Hawks 44-43 in the Battle for the Paddle spirit game at Les Rogers Court on Friday.

Strock was fouled as time expired.

Payton Sterling had six points in the fourth quarter, including a jumper with less than two minutes to go to give Lakeland the lead.

“As soon as they got their feet under them, it presented a few challenges for us,” Sandpoint coach Will Love said. “Especially on the defensive end.”

With the win, Sandpoint (13-4, 4-3 IEL) will be the top seed in the 4A Region 1 tournament.

Lakeland (9-7, 1-6) hosts Kellogg on Tuesday.

Sandpoint travels to Timberlake on Tuesday.

POST FALLS — It was back and forth, until the Vikings took over in the second quarter.

Junior Madison Mitchell hit two 3-pointers in the second as the Vikings closed the first half on an 11-0 run to beat the Trojans in a 5A Inland Empire League game at The Arena.

Mitchell scored 11 of her 16 7 opinJunior Teagan Colvin scored 12, all in the first half for Coeur d’Alene (15-2, 6-0 IEL).

“It was a game of turnovers,” Post Falls coach Brian Hall said. “But when they’d get the ball, they’d score and we’d turn it back over. Both Colvin and Mitchell had a big first half.”

Senior Capri Sims had 19 points for Post Falls (17-2, 5-2), which has lost two straight after winning its first 17 games.

“It’s been a learning experience for us,” Hall said. “But it shows we’re not invincible and need to step up our game.”

The teams meet again Thursday at Viking Court.

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Sophia Zufelt hit two 3-pointers in the second quarter, part of her 19-point night, and the host Timberwolves outscored the Bengals 21-9 in the period to pull away for the Inland Empire League victory on senior night.

Junior Avery Waddington scored 20 points for Lake City (15-3, 6-1 IEL), and Kamryn Pickford added 15 points.

KALISPELL, Mont. — Symone Pilgrim grabbed 22 rebounds to go along with 10 points as the shorthanded Royals beat the Cougars at Stillwater Christian School.

Danica Kelly had 14 points, five assists and five steals for North Idaho Christian (23-2). Chelsea Cate had 10 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots, Rylee Overturff nine points and three blocks, Jennifer Peterson seven points, seven assists and three steals for the Royals, who beat the Cougars for the third time this season.

Bailey Prewitt and Katherine Paolini each scored 10 points for Stillwater Christian.
