PREP ROUNDUP: Timberlake rallies past Sandpoint in OT

SPIRIT LAKE — Somehow, some way, it became Timberlake’s night on Tuesday.

The Tigers, ranked third in 3A, scored the final eight points with 1:08 remaining in regulation, then outscored the visiting Sandpoint Bulldogs, ranked fourth in 4A, 12-3 in overtime for a 57-48 win at Timberlake High.

Timberlake senior Ciara Soumas hit a 3-pointer, junior Jenna Chase made two free throws and freshman Malia Miller converted a three-point play with 22 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 45-45.

Both teams missed on shots to end the game in regulation.

Miller then scored seven of her 14 points in overtime for Timberlake, which fell 48-39 at Sandpoint on Jan. 12.

“We had some good looks at the basket in the third and fourth quarter, but the shots just weren’t falling,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “At the start of overtime, we were getting similar shots, but they were going in. The girls fought hard. It would have been easy to give up down eight, but they kept fighting and the ball started falling our way.”

Junior Karlie Banks scored 17 points, junior Aliya Strock 16 for Sandpoint (13-5), which hosts Moscow next Tuesday. Kelsey Cessna and Daylee Driggs, both seniors, did not play for Sandpoint due to injury.

“Both Karlie and Aliya are really good players and were aggressive all night,” Matt Miller said. “We had a hard time with both of them. Being shorthanded, that kind of changed things a little. But both Karlie and Aliya played great games.”

Chase had 16 points for Timberlake (15-2), which hosts Bonners Ferry in the inaugural Backwoods Brawl spirit game on Friday.

BONNERS FERRY — Ridge Williams, Eli Blackmore, Asher Williams and Braeden Blackmore scored 10 points each for the 3A Badgers in a win over the 2A Wildcats.

Riply Luna had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Kolby Luna 20 points for Kellogg (12-4), which had its eight-game winning streak snapped.

“They came out and gave us a different look defensively in the third quarter and we turned it over too much,” said Kellogg coach Mike Martin, whose team was outscored 21-9 in the third quarter. “And Bonners makes you pay when you turn it over. We allowed them to get out in transition and they kind of kept it at arms length.”

Bonners Ferry (13-1), which beat Kellogg in last year's 3A District 1 championship game, travels to Timberlake for the first Backwoods Brawl spirit game on Friday.

Kellogg hosts Priest River on Friday.
