Dorothy Jacklin passed away peacefully June 22, 2023, at Schneidmiller Hospice House in the gentle embrace of her loving husband, Don Jacklin, and their five children. Born on Jan. 21, 1938, in Jacksonville, Fla., she was preceded in death by her sister, Yvonne Maggard.

Dorothy is survived by her five children, Kim (Rick Maxey) Jacklin of Murrieta, Calif., Dana (Ibrahim) Al Rashoodi, of Bahrain/Post Falls, Idaho, Glenn (Kristina) Jacklin of Rathdrum, Idaho, Gayle (Michael) Stegmann, Rathdrum, Idaho, and Laurice (Jessi) Webb of Rathdrum, Idaho. Dorothy is also survived by her adoring nieces, nephews, 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She is additionally survived by her brother-in-law, Doyle Jacklin, and sister-in-laws Ardith Bryan and Susan Jacklin.

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Dorothy worked as a secretary and in retail. She met Don when she came home after work and found him visiting her mother’s husband, ready to go out for the evening. Don was in the Navy stationed in Jacksonville. It was a whirlwind romance, culminating in a long and loving marriage of nearly 63 years. She traded palm trees and sandy beaches for pine trees and four seasons when they moved to Pullman, Wash. There, Don attended Washington State University, and by graduation, their household had grown to four children. By the time her fifth child, Laurice, was born, she had earned the nickname “Fertile Myrtle” bestowed upon her by her many friends.

Resourceful, hardworking and determined, Dorothy took care of her family in farm-to-table style, partnering with Don to grow abundant gardens they harvested, preserved, and fed their family. Don, an excellent hunter, brought home a plethora of wild game which did not deter Dorothy, who took on the challenge and would turn it into amazing cuisine.

Not only was Dorothy confident, funny, graceful and elegant, but she also had a sense of adventure and loved to travel. She visited many places around the world, ziplining in jungles and hiking in foreign countries. Dorothy was inspired by writer Rich Landers’ book, 100 Hikes of the Pacific Northwest, and set out to complete them all. She was nearly done when cancer struck. With unwavering determination, she survived it and went on to finish the remaining hikes.

A proficient golfer with several holes-in-one, Dorothy was also Past President of the Women’s Golf Club at the Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course. She was a major donor of the Westwood Historical Society’s restoration project: the Old Kootenai County Jail Museum.

Dorothy was an excellent pianist, played the guitar, danced and sang. She also enjoyed reading, cooking, quilting, knitting, crocheting and sewing. Dorothy was loved deeply by her family, who miss her very much.

A celebration of life will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at the Jacklin Arts & Culture Center, 405 N. William St., Post Falls, Idaho 83854, followed by a reception.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s honor may be made to the Schneidmiller Hospice House or the Westwood Historical Society/Old County Jail Museum.
