Contract awarded to widen sidewalk near Quincy High

Quincy City Council members approved a contract to widen a sidewalk, pictured, across the street from Quincy High School during their Wednesday evening meeting. The hope is that the project will be completed before classes begin in the fall, allowing students a safer walk to school.

QUINCY — A section of Jackrabbit Way opposite Quincy High School will get a wider sidewalk. Quincy Public Works Director Carl Worley said city officials are hoping the project will be completed by the time school starts in late August.
“That’s our goal,” Worley said.
The contract was awarded to Vasquez Construction, Quincy, to widen about 1,310 feet of sidewalk between Third Avenue NE and Sixth Avenue NE. It’s next to the community garden, directly across the street from QHS.
Quincy City Council members voted to approve the contract Wednesday. Total project cost is $60,000 plus tax.
The existing sidewalk will be widened by about five feet, Worley said.
The project contract calls for the excavation of the existing dirt, replacing that with a base layer of new material and pouring a new sidewalk about four inches thick.
Jackrabbit Way borders on a housing development with a wall facing the street. The property between the existing sidewalk and the wall is unimproved ground, some but not all of it filled with the community garden.

Road closures, roundabout, mean construction season underway
EPHRATA — The grass is starting to turn green, the trees are starting to leaf out, construction crews are starting to build roundabouts – hey, it’s spring. At least one roundabout project is in its final phase, held over from fall 2025. The intersection of State Route 282 and Nat Washington Way will be closed the week of April 6 to allow crews to install permanent lights. “This really is the final (closure),” wrote Grant County Administrator Tom Gaines in a media release. “The roundabout will close at 6 a.m. Monday, and we plan to reopen by Friday, possibly sooner if the work finishes early.”

QUINCY — State Representative Alex Ybarra, R-Quincy, has announced his candidacy for the Washington Senate. If he’s elected, he would replace Judy Warnick, R-Moses Lake, who announced her retirement in March.
Othello Community Museum to open April 25
OTHELLO — With a couple of new exhibits, a new heating-cooling system, rearranged displays and a thorough cleaning, the Othello Community Museum will open for the summer April 25. The goal, said Molly Popchock, museum board secretary, is to operate for a full season.
