Manzardo to miss Futures Game with shoulder injury

SEATTLE — Former Lake City High and Washington State standout Kyle Manzardo traveled to Seattle but will miss today's MLB Futures Game at T-Mobile Park due to a shoulder injury.

Patrick Kinas, TV and radio play-by-play voice of the Triple-A Durham Bulls, tweeted that Manzardo left Thursday night's Bulls game with a shoulder injury.

Kinas said Manzardo had a clean MRI on Friday morning, and could be out a couple of weeks.

Manzardo, a lefty swinging first baseman and a second-round draft choice (63rd overall) of the Tampa Bay Rays, is batting .238 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs for Durham.

Former Lakeland standout Bartlett headed into Carroll Athletics Hall of Fame

HELENA, Mont. — Bubba Bartlett, a tight end from Lakeland High who was part of the 2007 and 2010 NAIA championship football teams at Carroll College, will be inducted into the Carroll Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 23.

In 2009 Bartlett was named AFCA first team All-American. In both 2009 and 2010, he was named first team All-Frontier Conference as well as VSN first team All-American.

Bartlett's 2008 Carroll football team, which finished as the national runner-up, is also being inducted into the hall of fame.

Former Zag Jacob called up by Padres

Former Gonzaga baseball pitcher Alek Jacob became the 28th former Zag player to make the major leagues and the third active former Bulldog in the MLB when the San Diego Padres called him up on Friday, prior to the Padres' home game vs. the New York Mets.

Jacob, the No. 26-ranked prospect in the Padres organization, began the season with the Double-A San Antonio Missions. The 25-year-old righty has thrown 27.1 innings over 18 appearances, striking out 32 and walking eight. Sporting a 1.32 ERA, Jacob has surrendered four runs this season and touts a 0.99 WHIP. Opponents are hitting .192 against the 6-3 righty. He has tallied five saves in his five opportunities as a closer for the Missions, striking out eight batters and walking only two in those appearances.

Prior to his 2023 campaign, Jacob spent time in El Paso with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate Chihuahuas, where he appeared in 16 games at the end of the 2022 season in which he was named Pitching Prospect of the Year for the Padres organization by MLB.com.

He also spent time with the Missions and the Padres’ High-A affiliate Fort Wayne TinCaps during that season. In 2021, Jacob began his minor league career with 19.1 consecutive scoreless innings before surrendering his first run in his final appearance of the season.

The Spokane native was drafted by the Padres in the 16th round of the 2021 draft after a four-year career at Gonzaga in which he was voted WCC Pitcher of the Year his senior season.

Jacob joins pitchers Casey Legumina (who was called up by Cincinnati earlier this season) and Eli Morgan (third season, Cleveland Guardians). Former Zag pitchers Marco Gonzales (Seattle Mariners) and Wyatt Mills (Boston Red Sox) are currently on major league rosters but have been sidelined due to injuries in 2023. Other notable Zag alums in the minor leagues include Brett Harris (Oakland Athletics, Double-A Midland) and Troy Johnston (Miami Marlins, Double-A Pensacola).

Boise State football announces staff additions

BOISE — Boise State football coach Andy Avalos announced additions to his staff for the 2023 season on Friday.

Brian Mullin (defensive) and Tyler Rausa (special teams) join the Broncos as coaching assistants. Lance Anderson will be an offensive senior analyst and Keaton Davis is the football operations coordinator.

Mullin was a defensive back at Whitworth from 2018-22. He was a two-time team captain and three-time Torchbearer Award, the team’s highest honor.

Rausa was a four-year member of the Broncos’ squad from 2013-16. In 2015, he was 25 for 30 in field goals and scored 134 points. The 25 field goals set a Boise State single-season record (since broken), was named a Lou Groza Award semifinalist and named All-Mountain West first team.

Anderson comes to Boise with over a quarter century of coaching experience. Stops include Idaho State, Bucknell, Saint Mary’s, Utah State, San Diego and, most recently, Stanford.

With the Cardinal, he was the recruiting coordinator from 2007-13, Willie Shaw Director of Defense from 2014-22, added the title of associate head coach in 2018 and was the interim head coach at the end of 2022. He helped Stanford win three Pac-12 titles, appear in five New Year’s Six bow games and 10-straight bowls overall.

Davis earned both his bachelor’s degree (2021) and master’s degree (2023) from Boise State. He spent the last two years a graduate assistant in equipment operations for Broncos’ football.
