MOSES LAKE — The Big Bend volleyball program will host a camp later this month, allowing youth, middle and high school volleyball players the chance to learn from Viking players and coaches over a three-day span.
Alexa Moser, head volleyball coach at Big Bend, said the camp had always been put on by her predecessor, Michael De Hoog.
“That’s something that I wanted to continue to do,” Moser said. “It’s not just a fundraiser for Big Bend volleyball; I think the importance is building that relationship with the community of Moses Lake and the surrounding areas to Quincy, Othello and Ritzville.”
The camp is split into age sessions, where youth, middle school and high school players will all have different times to work with Big Bend coaches and players.
“Definitely wanted to include everyone,” Moser said. “You have the high schoolers who will have tryouts in just a couple of weeks; you have the middle schoolers, their season isn't until a little bit later; for little kids, just get them excited about the sport running around in the gym.”
While the experience of learning lessons from active collegiate players will be beneficial for the campers, Moser said that a similar effect will be shared with the Viking players.
“I’m super excited to have them help out, because not only will it benefit the younger kids to have more hands-on instruction, but truthfully I think it’ll benefit my team as well to know how to teach the game of volleyball,” Moser said. “You learn a whole new perspective when you have to teach it versus when you’re just the one listening to the information.”
Players will get the opportunity to learn different facets of the game of volleyball during their time at the camp, covering everything from passing to serving to hitting.
“One of my big philosophies is you get better at volleyball by playing volleyball, so I’m hoping to do a lot of competitive games,” Moser said.
Along with getting to work on their volleyball game, campers will also get a look at what Big Bend is like.
“Not just get touches on a volleyball and learn new things (about the game), but just to also make them aware that for the future Big Bend is a great option,” Moser said. “For school, for volleyball, whatever it may be.”
The cost of registration for the camp is $50 and includes a T-shirt. Registration can be done online at https://bit.ly/3Dc9ph1. The sessions are as follows: high schoolers 8-10 a.m.; middle schoolers 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; youth 1-3 p.m.
