THE FRONT ROW with MARK NELKE: Big Sky questions set to be answered Monday

Some of the more glitzy college football media days have passed.

The SEC event takes four days, because, well, it’s the SEC.

The Pac-12 media day — emphasis on day — was over in one day. I feel for the media who had a limited amount of time to fight over 12 coaches and 24 players.

At the SEC media days, well-dressed coaches spoke from lecterns, with microphones to amplify their thoughts to the masses in the media.

At the Pac-12 media day on Friday, it was business casual, with coaches and players sitting on furniture as they spoke with the media.

The Big Sky Football Kickoff, by comparison, is a little more down-home.

The media day itself is scheduled for Monday at the Northern Quest Resort & Casino in Airway Heights.

For a few hours in the morning, one coach and two players from each team sit at tables in one big ballroom, and the assembled media shuffles from table to table, much like speed dating, to (hopefully) grab a few minutes with each coach and athlete they desire.

No microphones.

No fancy chairs.

Just you and the coach — or the players — sometimes.

Anyway, this will be the fourth time the event has been held in the Spokane area. The first three years were downtown; this one’s just outside Spokane, past the airport.

HERE’S SOME questions that could come up on Monday:

• Can Idaho live up to the hype this year? The Vandals flew under the radar last year under first-year coach Jason Eck, flying all the way to the Vandals’ first FCS playoff berth since 1995. This year, the expectations will be higher, and the conference schedule will be tougher.

• Will Eastern Washington return to being, well, Eastern Washington this season? After more than a decade of being among the top teams in the conference, the Eagles slipped to 3-8 last year.

• Is Montana, long one of the heavyweights in the Big Sky, tired of Montana State being the best football team in the state these days? Montana State has won five of the last six Cat-Griz games, including all four when Jeff Choate, the former St. Maries High star and former Post Falls football coach and athletic director, was head coach in Bozeman. Montana won in 2021, but the Bobcats rolled last year en route to a berth in the FCS title game.

• Will Cody Hawkins be the answer at Idaho State, after a seemingly endless revolving door of coaches in Pocatello? The Bengals have had just two winning seasons in the last 19 years, and are on their sixth coach during that span.

• What will UC Davis coach Dan Hawkins think when he looks across the room and sees his son Cody, the ISU coach? And what about when they look across the field at each other on Nov. 11, when UC Davis plays at ISU?

• What’s the mood at Cal Poly, where one former EWU coach (Paul Wulff, also a former Washington State coach) replaces another former Eagle coach (Beau Baldwin)? Baldwin, who guided EWU to a national championship in 2010, went 4-21 in three seasons at Cal Poly, and is now offensive coordinator at Arizona State. The Mustangs haven’t had a winning season since 2016, going 13-45 over the past six seasons.
