Frederick 'Fred' Louis Sorsabal, 85

Frederick “Fred” Louis Sorsabal, 85, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, died July 22, 2023, at Schneidmiller Hospice House in Cd'A. Fred was born July 24, 1937, in Fullerton, Calif., to Andrew and Earma (Thompson) Sorsabal.

Fred grew up in Fullerton and attended school from kindergarten through junior college on three corners of an intersection in Fullerton. He got his bachelor of science degree in political science from Long Beach State College (now Cal State University), Long Beach, Calif.

He married his high school sweetheart, Marlene Hesser, on July 25, 1958, in Anaheim, Calif. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.

He worked opening day for Disneyland on July 17, 1955, after graduating from FUHS. He started working for the city of Anaheim as an intern during his senior year in college, later becoming assistant to the city manager. He went on to become city manager for the cities of Costa Mesa and El Segundo, as well as the first city manager for the city of Mission Viejo.

Fred and Marlene lived in Orange County most of their lives, moving to Placerville, Calif., in 1995 after retirement. They loved to travel and moved to Cd'A in 2019.

Fred is a Senior DeMolay; Past Master of his Masonic Lodge in Anaheim and now a member of Placerville Lodge No. 26 and Kootenai Lodge No. 24 in Cd'A; served the Masons of California as Grand Master in 2005-06; a 33° 50-year Scottish Rite Mason, as well as a 50-year member of El Bekal Shrine in Anaheim, having served as Potentate in 1986.

In addition to his wife, Marlene, Fred is survived by two sons, David (Marlene Coker) of Hayden; Bryan (Cheryl Gentch) of Frankfort, Ky.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Don, of Fresno, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Bill, and sister-in-law Donna Hesser of Reno, Nev.; and six nieces, two nephews, their spouses and children. Fred is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, two sisters-in-law, a grandson and a nephew.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the California Masonic Foundation or Shriners Hospital for Children.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2023, at the Coeur d'Alene Scottish Rite Center, 8999 N. Strahorn Road, Hayden, Idaho, with Yates Funeral Home in care of the arrangements.
