Will Beckenhauer allowed two hits over five innings, striking out five for the Lumbermen in a 10-0 win over JNS Baseball of Idaho Falls to win the state ‘A’ American Legion baseball championship on Sunday at Rodeo Park.
“Will pitched an amazing game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jim Allison said. “His brother was in a scooter accident and he went out and pitched the game for him. The kids were just focused and played great baseball.”
Coeur d’Alene (32-9) advances to the Northwest Regional tournament starting Friday in Havre, Mont.
Coeur d’Alene defeated JNS Baseball 12-11 on Friday to clinch a spot in Sunday’s championship game despite losing Saturday’s game to the Idaho Falls Bruins.
“Us coaches told them we’re not going to regional on a hand-me-down,” Allison said. “We told them we had to earn it, so we came up with a story about run differential and that we had to win Sunday. And the boys came out, put their heads down and believed they had to do it and played maybe our most complete game of the year. We came out full of fire and hustled like crazy. The kids were smart on the bases, and had great at-bats.”
Mark Holecek doubled twice and scored two runs, Tanner Franklin drove in three runs for the Lums.
JNS Baseball (25-16), which beat the Idaho Falls Bruins 10-1 in Sunday’s early game, also advances to regionals as the state runner-up.
