Findlay Stadium Stateline Speedway is encouraging kids to get excited about auto racing.
Youngsters get in free at Speedster Night, beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday at the speedway, 1349 N. Beck Road, Post Falls. Anyone 17 and under will get a free ticket for a full night of racing in multiple classes. Adult tickets are $13 online or $15 at the door.
“The night is geared toward getting kids involved,” speedway lineup girl Jody Duncan said. “It’s kind of a family thing. We’re trying to show kids they don’t have to be older to race.”
Event classifications are Bandoleros, Late Models, Legends and Hobby Stocks.
Each class has a qualifying lap followed by an eight-lap race for trophies.
Bandoleros is sponsored by Angel's Bail Bonds. Youth ages 5-12 can run a quarter mile track in 16 seconds. Youths race with added safety parameters and steps to keep them safe.
“Down South, they’re starting kids really young — and they’re the ones that go to NASCAR,” Duncan said. “Kids start in go-karts and move up.”
Following the training wheels will be Late Models, a NASCAR-style class sponsored by Racecals. The cars are fast, often expensive and roaring loud.
Next up is the lightweight class of Legends, sponsored by Rayce Rudeen. Legends are typically really low cars with motorcycle-style engines and light bodies that compete very fast.
Hobby Stocks are a class of all V8 muscle cars, weighing at least 3,200 pounds. Johnson Surveying sponsors the classic roadsters.
Qualifying will begin at 4 p.m., which is when gates open.
Each driver gets one lap to warm up tires before the green flags go up.
“It’s a way of life, and it’s all we do for six months,” Duncan said. “It’s a very good community.”
