LEGION BASEBALL: Northern Lakes returns from layoff, beats Orofino
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 years, 3 months AGO
OROFINO — Kenny Wells went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs in the first game, and the Northern Lakes Mountaineers scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Orofino Merchants 10-3 in class A North Idaho League play Monday.
Northern Lakes won the nonleague second game 6-1.
“Pleasantly surprised how we swung it today,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. “It had been 10 days since we played, and with graduation … especially in the seventh, it started with good at-bats. We did a good job of putting the ball in play, and good things happened.”
In the opener, Wells had an RBI triple in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie, and an RBI double in the sixth to make it 3-1 Northern Lakes (3-1, 2-1 NIL).
In the seventh, with the Mountaineers leading 3-2, Raiston Ellwood tripled in a run, and Grant Allaway, Wells and Sam Pemberton added RBI singles.
“Kenny Wells hit the ball well in the first game,” Johnson said.
Tadhg Ellwood gave up one run on three hits in five innings in the opener, striking out two and walking two.
The teams endured a one-hour lightning delay in the bottom of the seventh, shortly after Allaway came on in relief and completed his warmup pitches with runners on first and second and nobody out.
An hour later, Allaway returned to the mound and recorded three straight outs on 14 pitches to close out the game.
In the second game, Parker Holly pitched a two-hitter for Northern Lakes, striking out six and walking two. The lone run allowed was unearned.
“Parker Holly was super efficient in the second game,” Johnson said.
Orofino is 5-4, 2-1.
