LEGION BASEBALL: Lums open with win at Lewiston tourney

LEWISTON — Joe DuCoeur went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, including a two-run double in a three-run sixth inning, as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen beat the Tri-City Titans 8-5 in their first game at Dwight Church Memorial Tournament on Friday at Lewis-Clark State’s Harris Field.

DuCoeur also singled in a run in the third inning for Coeur d’Alene (7-4).

“Joe was money,” Lums coach Darren Taylor said.

Jesse Brown drove in a pair of runs, giving him a team-high 11 RBIs. Bryce Hall went 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

“Caden Robinett threw a really good game,” Taylor said. “We booted two double plays that cost him most of his runs.”

Robinett gave up four runs in 5.2 innings, but just one was earned.

The Lums made two nice diving catches in the outfield, Taylor said. Right fielder Ty Shepard made a catch near the line early in the game. In the seventh, with the bases loaded and the Lums up 8-4, left fielder Nolan Christ snagged a ball that would have cleared the bases, instead limiting the damage to a sacrifice fly. The Titans failed to score after that, and the game ended two batters later.

Coeur d’Alene plays the Nampa Chiefs at 10:30 a.m. and the Lewis-Clark Twins at 6 p.m. to conclude pool play. The game vs. the Twins will also be a class AA North Idaho League game, counting toward seeding to the state tournament for both teams, who have both already qualified for state next month at Thorco Field in Coeur d’Alene.

Northern Lakes splits to open Bozeman tourney

BOZEMAN, Mont. — The class A Mountaineers beat the Missoula Mavericks 16-4, and lost to the Helena Reps 8-6, at the Howard Rein tournament.

In the first game, C. Mason was 4 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Northern Lakes (5-3). Raiston Ellwood was 4 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored, Andrew Horn was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs, and Sam Pemberton was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs.

"We probably hit the ball as well as we can hit it in the first game," Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. "And we were hitting it hard. We were in the first game of the day, and from the first pitch of the game, we were swinging."

In the second game, Ellwood hit a two-run single in the fourth to put Northern Lakes up 5-4, and Horn and Jace Cooksey each had two hits.

The Mountaineers led 6-4 after four, but the Reps scored four in the fifth to take the lead back for good.

"We had them," Johnson said. "We had a couple errors (in that inning) that cost us."

Today, Northern Lakes plays the Kalispell Lakers at 9 a.m. and the Bozeman Bucks at 7 p.m.
