I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | June 21, 2023 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT – The North Idaho Lakers defeated the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 2-1 after a late-inning rally at War Memorial Field on Tuesday.

In doing so, the Lakers snapped the Lumbermen’s 12-game win streak by handing them their first loss since May 29.

In the sixth inning, the Lakers were finally able to bring home a couple of runs against Coeur d’Alene pitcher Tanner Franklin after trailing the entire game. Jayden Kuprienko got aboard after being hit by the first pitch of the inning. Mason Little then singled to left field. Both runners would eventually be sacrificed to second and third after a deep fly ball to right by Coleman Inge.

On the very next at bat, Dallen Williams drove in Kuprienko via a single to shortstop. On the throw to first, the ball went wide left, prompting Little to take a chance that paid off in a big way. Little just narrowly slid past Coeur d’Alene catcher Lane Moglia to put the Lakers ahead 2-1. Fortunately for the Lakers, the Lumbermen would not be able to respond in the final inning of play.

Williams, who brought in North Idaho’s only RBI, pitched an amazing game on the mound. Williams threw all seven innings for the Lakers, giving up just three hits, one run, and one walk while striking out six batters. Little, who scored the go-ahead run, went three-for-three with three singles in the lead-off spot. Jordan Tyler and Zeke Roop were the only other Lakers to record hits in the contest.

The Lakers (7-6, 4-2) will be back in action against the Mission Valley Mariners and Bitterroot Bucks on Thursday in the first round of the Libby Big Bucks Tournament in Libby, Mont.
