LEGION BASEBALL: Tadhg Ellwood's no-hitter fuels Northern Lakes sweep
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 years, 2 months AGO
LEWISTON — Left-hander Tadhg Ellwood pitched a no-hitter in the opener, and the Timberlake Tigers went on to sweep the Lewis-Clark Cubs 4-1 and 12-4 in class A North Idaho League play Monday at Lewis-Clark State’s Harris Field.
Ellwood struck out five, walked three and hit three for Northern Lakes (10-5, 5-3 NIL).
“It was awesome; Tadhg was lights out tonight,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. “After the third or fourth inning he started to settle down and was real efficient.”
However, Northern Lakes trailed 1-0 heading into the sixth, as Lewis-Clark parlayed a hit by pitch, a walk, a sacrifice bunt, another hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly into the lead.
In the sixth, Sam Pemberton walked with one out, a pair of walks loaded the bases, and Raiston Ellwood singled in Pemberton to tie the game.
One out later, Andrew Horn singled to left to score two runs. Ellwood then scored on a bases-loaded walk.
Horn was 3 for 3 in the opener.
Andrew’s been hitting the snot out of the baseball,” Johnson said. “He had a big hit — right guy, right time.”
All three outfielders — Raiston Ellwood, Tadhg’s older brother, in center field, as well as Horn in left and Kenny Wells in right — made no-hitter-saving catches.
In the seventh, the suspense was not just whetherTadhg could finish the no-hitter, but also do it under the pitch count limit of 105. On his 98th pitch, the Cubs’ batter hit a flare toward short left field, but shortstop Caleb Mason made a backpedaling, leaping catch to end the game.
In the second game, Horn and Grant Allaway each had two hits, Pemberton and Raiston Ellwood each drove in two runs, and Parker Holly scattered seven hits in six innings.
Northern Lakes plays at Coeur d’Alene today at 5 p.m. at Thorco Field.
