Confident Wolfpack downs Big Sky again

One thing about week-old, 30-points wins is they tend to breed confidence.

Glacier’s boys again made pretty short work of Missoula Big Sky Thursday, defeating the Eagles 54-31 to make the semifinals of the Western AA Divisional at Flathead High School.

Cohen Kastelitz scored 19 points to lead the Wolfpack (13-6) into Friday’s nightcap against Helena (14-5), which swamped Missoula Sentinel 73-45 Thursday.

The Bengals and Wolfpack split their regular-season meetings, each winning on the other team’s floor.

Last Thursday the Wolfpack beat the Eagles 68-38 at home, riding transition threes.

This was more about Kastelitz wheeling around inside: He did hit a 3-pointer, but the rest of his makes were inside the key.

“They were definitely playing us more back this game, not rebounding as hard,” Kastelitz said. “But we were running the ball still, really well.”

The Pack were 3 of 16 from the arc, but 50 percent from inside it. Kastelitz’ steal and coast-to-coast drive was one early highlight; Ty Olsen converted a steal of his own for a 17-3 Glacier lead after one quarter.

When Jeff Lillard scored off a scramble under the Glacier basket, the Wolfpack led 33-13 just before halftime.

Olsen had 14 points. Noah Dowler filled up the stat sheet with 15 rebounds and three blocks, to go with six points. Glacier ruled the boards 37-26, and held Big Sky to its season low in points.

“He’s been doing it all season — he’s just a dog on the boards,” said Kastelitz, who had seven boards of his own. “It’s the part of the game that he impacts us the most. That’s his identity.”

“It did turn into a little different style of game, a little more half-court game than last week,” Glacier coach Mark Harkins said. “They were really conscious of taking away our wings in transition. But I thought we did a great job — Cohen did a great job of getting the ball inside and scoring — of attacking the rim.

“And I was especially proud of our defense. I thought our defense was very, very good.”

Big Sky (8-11) and Sentinel (3-16) will play a loser-out game Friday at 2 p.m.
