It was a great start the Glacier girls put together Thursday morning, in the first game of the Western AA Divisional basketball tournament at Flathead High School.
Unfortunately the rest of the game was all Missoula Hellgate: The top-seeded Knights got a triple-double from Alex Covill and rolled to a 63-33 win.
The Knights, 14-5, rode 26 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocked shots from Covill into Friday’s 3:30 p.m. semifinal. They’ll take on Missoula Big Sky (11-8), who used a late burst to down Helena 46-39 Thursday.
That leaves Glacier (2-17) to play the Bengals (11-8) in a loser-out game at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
Hellgate 63, Glacier 33
The Wolfpack came out strong, going up 14-7 when Kenedee Moore sandwiched steals and layups around a Sarah Downs 3-pointer.
From there they cooled off. Hellgate didn’t, offsetting 17 turnovers against the Pack’s pressure defense by hitting 24 of 37 shots (65 percent) from the floor. Covill, a 6-foot-6 Washington State recruit, hit all 10 of her field goal attempts and all six of her free throws.
It was her bucket that gave Hellgate the lead for good, 19-18, at 5:46 of the second quarter; that was in the midst of a 19-5 run that put the Knights up 32-23.
Covill had similar numbers last Saturday — 27, 16 and six — against Glacier, but the Pack were able to hit seven 3-pointers and keep the Knights in range before losing, 59-50.
Thursday Glacier shot just 20 percent.
“I think offensively that we took good shots,” coach Amanda Cram said. “I don’t know that we always took a great shot. Certainly, some games they fall, like they did this past Saturday. Others they don’t.
“But really it’s not about Hellgate, it’s about how we recover and get ready for tomorrow.”
Reese Ramey led Glacier with 11 points. Chloe Larsen had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Knights.

Freshman Avory DeCoite scored 17 points for Big Sky, and Kaydynce Couture had 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Eagles could have made things easier on themselves at the line — they hit just 12 of 30 free throws — but they hit 7 of 10 over the final 2:16.
After Helena drew even on a Madi Todorovich put-back with 2:35 left, Gianna Janacaro’s free throw gave Big Sky the lead for good, 37-36.
DeCoite hit another free throw and Sadie McGuinn hit two more before McGuinn converted a steal into a layup for a 42-36 lead with 1:03 left. McGuinn had eight points.
