Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 years, 5 months AGO
Donald Robb Pfost, 82, passed away unexpectedly Feb. 23, 2023.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lois (FitzSimmons); daughters Kathleen Kieckhafer (Chris) and Michelle Pfost; grandson Travis Godec (Jody); granddaughters Kailey and Ashley Kieckhafer; and great-grandsons Camden and Brendan. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Virginia and George; and brothers Richard and George Leroy.
Born July 2, 1940, in Boise, Idaho, he served his military service in the Army band before continuing his education at North Idaho Junior College, followed by a bachelor of education from the University of Idaho and a Ph.D. in sociology from CU Boulder. He taught as a sociology professor at Western Carolina University for 15 years before returning to Colorado to start a second profession as a statistical analyst for the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment for another 15 years.
Very politically active throughout his life, Don traveled several times to Nicaragua and spent many years protesting nuclear proliferation. Of special note were his memberships in the Southern Colorado Runners, Health Care for All Colorado and Sierra Club, especially concerning climate change. He was a lifelong runner and woodworker, and he spent many of his later years volunteering at the Pueblo Friends of the Library used bookstore, Books Again.
After retirement, Don had the opportunity to enjoy some trips abroad with his wife — Ireland and Scotland to explore his heritage, Kauai, Hawaii, and many trips to watch baseball games umpired by his grandson, Travis.
At his request, he was cremated and there will not be a service at this time. Memorials can be made to Care & Share or a charity of your choice. A celebration of life is planned for this summer.
