LEWISTON — It didn’t quite start where either Sandpoint or Coeur d’Alene thought it was going to at the start, but again, it’s a start.

Senior Bryce Stockton struck out five of seven batters faced, walking one and senior Kyle Bridge had a single and two runs scored in the first game for Coeur d’Alene, which beat Sandpoint 4-2 in the first game of an Inland Empire League matchup in the season and league opener for both schools at Church Field on Saturday.

Austin Dillon, who has signed with Yakima Valley of the Northwest Athletic Conference, allowed three hits over five innings for Sandpoint.

The games, previously scheduled for Coeur d’Alene High, were moved to Lewiston due to snow on Thursday.

“They threw a decent arm in that first game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “We both knew that coming down here we’d be in the same boat. And we were able to execute things that we wanted to do.”

In the nightcap, senior Jesse Brown drove in three runs as the Vikings earned the sweep with a 14-3 victory.

“We lost our approaches at the plate a little in the first game, but were able to do what we wanted offensively in the second game,” Karns said. “I’m excited to see how these guys continue to grow throughout the season.”

Senior Elliot Smart had two hits and three runs scored in the second game for Coeur d’Alene, which is scheduled to host Gonzaga Prep on Tuesday.

This year, when 5A teams in the IEL host the 4A teams in doubleheaders, those games count in the combined league standings, which are used to determine seeding the 5A and 4A regional tournaments.

Sandpoint is scheduled to host Timberlake on Tuesday.
