An eclectic new shop has opened on Nucleus Avenue next to Brooklyn Bagels.
Coyote features local art and handmade jewelry, vintage and new clothing, gift cards and furniture.
“It’s a lifestyle boutique,” owner Cody Bauer said last week. “A mix of everything. There’s no rules. A mix of high and low (prices).”
Bauer is a Kalispell native and a Glacier High School graduate from 2009. He spent 12 years in Texas working in the art world — eight in Austin and then four in Marfa, the Texas art mecca perched on the high plains of the Chihuahua desert.
He said he was attracted to Columbia Falls because of its laid-back vibe.
“The speed is a little slower here,” he said.
He thought business would be slow until tourist season, but business has been quite steady, he said.
Bauer is an artist himself, he does mosaic “mid century” works that look like they would fit right into the decor of the set of Mad Men.
Bauer makes jewelry and the shop also features local artists including ceramics from Kali Ko of Columbia Falls and handpainted block prints from Terek Penner of Whitefish.
Bauer comes from an artistic family — both of his grandmothers were artists, he said.
The shop also features a host of gift cards (if you’re looking for an offbeat card, this is the store) and will soon have more home lighting options as well, including lights from Jesse Corbett Custom Lighting out of Kalispell.
There’s also some practical items — Bauer also sells personal cans of bear spray, emergency blankets and handy multi-tools that would be a great addition to any backpack.
Coyote is open Wednesday through Saturday 10-5 and Sundays 10-3.
