It was, to say the least, a very successful showing for Western Division Class B and C teams as the 2022-23 Montana High School basketball season came to a close this past weekend in Billings.

Three of the four champions crowned in those two classifications, including both boys champions and one of two girls champions, competed in the Western Division tournaments.

Teams from the Western 7B conference, Bigfork’s girls and Missoula Loyola’s boys won state titles, while the boys Western C champion, Manhattan Christian, advanced to the state final out of the Western Division tournament in Butte.

The four state championship teams in the B and C classes combined for an eye-popping 103 wins and two losses during the season, led by Bigfork’s girls and three-team co-op Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale, both of whom finished with 26-0 records to go compliment their state titles.

Both boys team champs had just one loss each, as Manhattan Christian compiled a 26-1 seasonal mark and Loyola went 25-1 on the year.

As had been the case throughout the 2022-23 campaign, other teams had no answer for Bigfork senior forward Braedon Gunlock, who had a game-high 22 points for the Valkyries in their 49-37 conquest of Big Timber Saturday night in the girls B final.

Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale, meanwhile, completed their unbeaten season with a comfortable 59-26 win over Western Division champion Twin Bridges in the Class C girls championship game.

On the boys side of the brackets, Loyola capped a 25-1 year with a 65-55 win over Malta, while the Eagles from Manhattan Christian added another first place trophy to their bulging display case by upending Big Sandy, 74-65 in the Class C championship game.
