"Art Uplifts," an exhibit inspired by and in memory of the late Jimmy Magnuson, will be at the Jacklin Arts and Cultural Center from 5:30-7:30 Friday night.

Magnuson — a beloved son, brother, musician, outdoorsman, loyal friend and brilliant artist — died May 17, 2021. He was just 36.

"He was Michaels' best customer," said his mom, Nita Magnuson of Coeur d'Alene. "All of his money went to paint."

Although his heart was full of love, his life was not without its struggles. Art was an outlet for him, as it is for many.

"We all struggle when it comes down to it. No one has it easy, you find that out through life," Nita said. "We all have struggles. Art is a positive way to stay in the moment."

At least 40 local artists will participate in the show, which is in its second year. Some of Jimmy's original art will also be on display.

The exhibit, which is free, will celebrate the healing power of art and the strength of people in the community. Their creations are part of a journey of hope, healing and courage. The show will emphasize how art has the power to help navigate life's challenges — recovery, grief, loss, diagnosis and more.

Homemade refreshments will be served.

"Art Uplifts" will run through May 19.

Christmas shopping is always better with friends. When those friends are festively clad classmates with a common goal of shopping for families in need while keeping to a budget, it makes that shopping experience much merrier. “It’s really nice and I’m super happy that I can bring joy to people who can’t afford as much as they would like,” Lake City High School senior Aurora Johnson said Thursday morning. "It’s a really fun and great activity, and I love how passionate our class is for it.”
