POST FALLS — A device designed to illegally collect credit card data was found Monday at a convenience store in Post Falls.

According to a press release, Post Falls police discovered an overlay skimmer had been installed on top of the point-of-sale credit card terminal.

Police said it was determined that the device collects credit card data from swiped cards as well as the customer’s pin number.

It does not have the ability to collect credit card data from EMV-chip transactions or data from contactless payment, the release said.

The skimmer was removed.

The Post Falls Police Department is asking businesses to be on the lookout for these devices.

"Cashiers need to know their equipment and check for these overlay devices throughout their shift," the release said.

Suspects can install these overlays in less than 10 seconds, police said.

Customers can protect themselves by using contactless payment options or EMV-chip transactions.

"Before using a terminal, we recommend you wiggle the point-of-sale terminal," the release said. "If it gives way, it could very well be an overlay skimmer."
