PREP BASEBALL: Lake City takes IEL title on final swings against Coeur d'Alene
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 year, 8 months AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — Two of the area heavyweights, with the title coming down to the final swings.
No, it wasn’t boxing, but ....
“Isn’t that how league titles are supposed to be like?” first-year Lake City coach Mike Criswell said. “It feels like I’ve been in the ring with Mike Tyson.”
Coeur d’Alene senior Bryce Stockton hit a two-run home run in the first inning of the opening, helping lead the Vikings to an 11-6 win. In the nightcap, Owen Mangini had three RBIs, including a two-run double in the seventh as the Timberwolves clinched the league title with an 11-9 win at Ted Page Field on Tuesday.
Bryce Hall and Nolan Christ had two RBIs each for Coeur d’Alene in the first game.
Coeur d'Alene needed to sweep, and win by a total of nine runs, to earn the top seed to regionals.
“Our approaches were great in that first game,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns, in his fourth season. “We had a lot of base hits and quality at-bats today.”
Lake City senior Eric Bumbaugh pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning in the second game.
“We were definitely better in the second game than the first,” Criswell said. “Coeur d’Alene swung the bats really well and you could tell that was how it was going to be today. It was a battle all day and just exactly what it should have been.”
In Monday’s opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament, Lake City (17-6, 16-2 IEL) will host fourth-seeded Post Falls (10-13, 8-10) and second-seeded Coeur d’Alene (14-10, 14-4) hosts third-seed Lewiston (13-11, 9-9), both starting at 4 p.m.
“We’re coming together as a group,” Karns said. “We competed in our at-bats and did a good job of answering back. Hats off to Lake City. They competed hard.”
