SANDPOINT — Junior Emma Avalos pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener, and the Lakeland Hawks went on to sweep the Sandpoint Bulldogs 13-0 and 19-9 in the regular-season and Inland Empire League softball finale for both teams Saturday in the rain and the mud at Sandpoint Middle School.
Alexis Hanna went 5 for 8 on the day and scored five runs for Lakeland (6-16, 4-12 IEL), and Katie Dewey had three hits and scored six runs.
In the second game, Mia Kesner went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs, and Kate Barnard went 2 for 4 and knocked in three runs for Lakeland
Sophomore pitcher Mackenzie Briggs, up from the junior varsity, started the second game and hit a two-run homer in the second inning for the Hawks.
Cadence Skibitsky, Ali Knowles, Hayden Koberstein and Sara Bryson each drove in two runs in the second game for Sandpoint (0-24, 0-16), which fought back to within 14-9 after five innings, before Lakeland scored five times in the sixth to pull away.
“The field conditions and weather made it tough to play today, but we bounced back well mentally in the second game,” Sandpoint coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams said. “We were hitting the ball hard and putting it in play, which made some good things happen for us. Hitting with runners in scoring position has been a struggle for us this year, so the performances by Ali Knowles, Cadence Skibitsky, and Hayden Koberstein, who all had two RBIs, were wins for us today.”
The 4A Region 1 tournament begins Tuesday at the Moscow School District Community Playfields. No. 2 seed Lakeland and No. 3 Sandpoint square off at 3 p.m. in a loser-out game. The winner plays No. 1 seed Moscow immediately following in Game 1 of a best-of-3 championship series for the region’s lone berth to state.
