It could be said, tongue in cheek, that Lincoln County was not a very good host for last week’s Top 8 NW track and field meet at Eureka High School.
But the truth is, Lincoln County (Eureka) was a fine and dandy host, they just have a pretty good track team and it showed in the team standings when all was said and done.
The Eureka women piled up 117 team points to easily outdistance second place Thompson Falls, which had 85. Sanders County’s other entrant, Noxon, was sixth with 43 points.
And it was pretty much the same situation in the men’s team race, the host school taking first with 111 team points to edge out runner up Libby, which had 102 points.
Thompson Falls’ men finished fifth with 80 points while Noxon, the only Class C team in the field, had 24.
And in reality, teams such as T-Falls did not bring their full contingent of athletes as a host of other competition options for the week were available due to schedule changes and early season weather issues.
Thompson Falls’ women had a pair of meet champions, led by senior Chesney Lowe who was first in the javelin throw with a toss of 108-09. Lowe also picked up a second place medal in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8-03, just behind event winner Karli Campbell’s winning height of 8-09.
Lowe added a second place medal in the long jump competition. Libby’s Bergen Fortner won the event with a leap of 14-08.50, while Lowe recorded a jump of 14-00.50.
The Lady Hawks also got a first place finish from junior distance standout Faith Palmer, who won the 1600 meter event, covering the four-lap course in 5:56.63.
Meanwhile, Noxon senior Skye Irgens also had a good meet, picking up second place medals in the 200 meter sprint, third place in both the 100 meter and 400 meter hurdle events and topping it off with a fourth place showing in the 400 meter run. She also had a second place finish in the women’s high jump.
Thompson Falls junior Trinity Triffle was second in the 400 meter run and second in the high jump competition for the Lady Hawks.
In the men’s competition, Noxon sophomore Ricky Williams was the lone Sanders County event winner, picking up a first place medal in the long jump with a leap of 5-08. Thompson Falls senior Breck Ferris was second after clearing the bar at 5-06.
Williams added a third place finish in the long jump with a personal best effort of 19-02.50, along with a second place effort in the 110 meter hurdles.
Ferris was second after jumping 19-03.75. He also added a fourth place finish in the 100 meter sprint to his day’s work.
Blue Hawks junior Cael Thilmony finished fourth in the 3200 meter run, behind a trio of Browning runners who swept the top spots. T Falls also got a fifth and sixth place finish from Brock Ryan and Ethan Geisbusch in the 800 meter run.
Sophomore Braedon Ferris picked up a second place ribbon in the men’s discus event with a personal best throw of 121-06. Braedon was also fourth in the 400 meter run.
Teammate Bryson LeCoure added a third place finish in the 300 meter hurdles and was third in the javelin for the Blue Hawks.
T Falls finished first in the men’s 4X100 relay and third in the 4X400 relay.
