HAYDEN LAKE — North Idaho College freshman Josh McCartin shot a 7-under 139 to earn medalist honors in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Avondale Golf Club on Tuesday.
“He played steady and bogey today (Tuesday),” NIC coach Russell Grove said. “He’s a great player, is really consistent and has a high golf IQ. He’s a solid player and we can count on him for sure.”
NIC edged Southwestern Oregon 584-585 for the men’s team title.
Freshman Laila Jalil was second with a 157 for NIC, which also claimed the women’s team title by one stroke with a 481, beating Bellevue by a stroke.
Both NIC teams finished the season unbeaten in conference.
“Hopefully we can carry that into next week,” Grove said. “It’s just kind of crazy with the men that after 584 strokes, one shot was the difference. The greens were a little faster today. I don’t really know what happened, and sometimes, that’s just golf. Everyone knows they’re capable of more. We’ll be fine if we can continue doing what we’ve been doing.”
NIC returns to action in the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships May 21-22 at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima, Wash.
Cole Jaworski, a freshman from Coeur d’Alene High, was 22nd with a 83-77—160 for the Community Colleges of Spokane.
