COEUR d’ALENE — A bounce-back season ended a bit harshly for the Lake City Timberwolves on Thursday.

The second-seeded Timberwolves lost 13-1 to the third seed Lewiston Bengals in the loser-out second-place game of the 5A Region 1 softball tournament.

Lake City (18-7), which finished 5-21 last year, mustered four hits against Lewiston (13-14), including a home run by freshman KaeLee Kolden leading off the bottom of the first.

“The season didn’t end how we had hoped, but I am beyond proud of how hard our team worked, and the enormous heart they had,” first-year Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. “They accomplished so much this year and showed they were a force to be reckoned with. I am already eager to get back on the field next year and continue building on what this year’s team started.”

Caitrin Reel and Morgan Williams each hit two-run homers for Lewiston, which plays Eagle on Saturday in Prairie in a state play-in game. Loryn Barney went 3 for 5 with a double and triple and three runs scored, and Jenna Barney had two hits and drove in three runs.

MOSCOW — The defending regional champion Hawks’ bid to return to state came to an end at the Moscow School District Community Playfields in Game 2 of a best-of-3 series for the 4A Region 1 title.

The top-seeded Bears won the series 2 games to 0, winning their first regional title since 2014, and advancing to state for the first time since that season.

Hannah Zeilstra went 2 for 2 and scored the lone run in the second inning for Lakeland, which finished 7-18. She singled and scored on an error to cut Moscow’s lead to 2-1.

Hannah Robertson hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Moscow (19-6). She finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Payton Sterling was 2 for 3 for Lakeland, which placed fourth at state last year.

Moscow went 10-0 vs. the other 4A schools in the Inland Empire League, including 4-0 vs. Lakeland and Sandpoint in league play.

Junior Kelly Stodick struck out four, scattered eight hits and allowed no earned runs for the Bears, who won Game 1 11-1 on Tuesday.

“We just can’t seem to figure out their pitcher,” second-year Lakeland coach Dwayne Curry said. “Moscow is a great team and I think we are going to have some incredible series over the next few years. We have a very freshman-heavy team. We learned a lot, and we took some great steps forward this year. I am really excited for the future of Lakeland softball.”

Nesbit to face Judson

for 5A girls singles title

COEUR d’ALENE — For the second straight year, Lake City’s Maddy Nesbit will face Coeur d’Alene’s Audrey Judson in the girls singles final in the 5A Region 1 tournament after both went unbeaten on the first day of the tournament at Coeur d’Alene High.

Nesbit won the regional title last year.

Coeur d’Alene’s Turner Cox (boys singles) and the Viking boys doubles teams of Alexander Nipp and Jake Whiting, and CJ Giao and Gabe Danser, will square off in the finals.

The tournament resumes Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High.

RATHDRUM — The Lakeland boys doubles team of Cole Andres and Brady Hanna advance to the finals at the 4A Region 1 tournament, winning in the semifinals in straight sets at Lakeland High.

The tournament resumes on Saturday at Lakeland High, with championship finals tentatively scheduled at 1 p.m., and consolation finals at 3 p.m.
