IDAHO FALLS — For the second Monday in a row, Stephen Paul of Kellogg went low — real low.

Paul, a junior, shot an 8-under-par 62 — six birdies and an eagle — for a six-shot lead after the first day of the state 2A golf tournament at Sage Lakes Golf Course.

Last week, Paul shot an 8-under-65 at The Links in Post Falls to win the District 1-2 title by one shot over Seth Swallows of St. Maries.

“Stephen's round today was hands down, the best round of golf I have seen in my 25-plus years of coaching golf, and that is saying something since the next best round happens to be his 65 at districts just a week prior,” Kellogg golf coach Simon Miller said. “Tee to green, Stephen was flawless, and his putting was pretty exceptional as well. I only single out the putting because I know how in tune Stephen is with his game, and I know he'd love to have a couple of those lip out putts back.”

Swallows shot 69 on Monday, and is in third.

“The boys played a great back nine and put themselves in a good position to win state,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We have a solid senior group that are competitors, and then throw Seth in the mix and they are a tough team to beat. The boys have all been here a few times and their confidence shined through today. Seth played smart and solid throughout the day. I think tomorrow he will be more aggressive, and go after more pins.”

The team leaderboard has a distinct North Idaho flavor, as St. Maries is in second place, two strokes back of Declo, after shooting 320. Genesis Prep is third with a 321, Kellogg tied for fourth with a 323.

“Being five strokes out of the lead doesn't seem like much, but there are some pretty solid and consistent teams ahead of us,” Miller said. “Our 2-through-5 boys will need to play considerably better for us to make a run, but that is entirely possible. They have all played much better earlier in the season, it is just a matter of re-focusing and limiting the mistakes.”

Beau Jones of Lakeside is tied for ninth after shooting 77.

Byron Hammett and CJ Elliott of Genesis Prep, Luke Butler and William Stockton of Priest River, and Lance Hamblin of St. Maries are tied for 11th after shooting 78.

Kellogg’s boys placed second last year in 3A; the Wildcats and Priest River dropped down to 2A this year.

In the girls tournament, St. Maries is fourth after shooting 407 on the first day, and Kellogg is seventh at 411. Ambrose shot 352 and leads by eight.

Sami Sindt of St. Maries shot 88 and is in eighth place.

The tourney concludes today.
