SANDPOINT — Lost in the '50s is revving up the fun as the annual event gets set to roar into town this weekend.

Lost in the ‘50s organizer and founder Carolyn Gleason announced the return of the event, which serves as the unofficial kickoff of summer, on its Facebook page last month.

Lost in the ‘50s is traditionally held the third weekend in May, kicking off the fun with a parade of classic and vintage rides through downtown Sandpoint on Friday night. Following will be a street dance on Second Street near the Jeff Jones Town Square and a show and dance at the Bonner County Fairgrounds.

The car parade begins at 6 p.m. Friday with hundreds of classic and vintage cars staging at Sandpoint High School before making their way down Church Street, turning left onto First Avenue and then west on Cedar.

Immediately following the parade, a street dance will be held on Main Street between Second and Third avenues. The dance is being dedicated to longtime DJ "Bashful Dan" Young. Also being held Friday is the first of two shows at the Bonner County Fairgrounds from 7 to 10 p.m.

Performing at Friday's show will be Jay Siegel's The Tokens, best known for the chart-topping "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in 1961. From the early '60s to the early '70s, the doo-wop-style vocal group had four top 40 hits, including "Tonight I Fell in Love."

Friday's show also features La La Brooks, the original lead singer of The Crystals and was the voice on the band's biggest hits "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "Then He Kissed Me." After leaving the band, Brooks appeared on Broadway as one of the original cast of the musical "Hair" and performed in "Two Gentlemen of Verona."

The fun continues Saturday with the car show taking over downtown Sandpoint, starting at 9:30 a.m. and continuing to 4 p.m. with cars filling up the streets. Cars will be on First, Second and Third avenues and on Cedar and Main streets.

From 7-10 p.m., the music of the era will again fill the fairgrounds with the second of two shows.

On Saturday, Jay and the Americans will take to the Lost in the '50s stage to get the fairgrounds jumping. Formed in the late 1950s, the band first hit the Billboard charts in 1962 with "She Cried" but it would be far from the last hit the band would note. Among their hits are "This Magic Moment," "Come a Little Bit Closer" and "Sands of Time."

“House band” Rocky and the Rollers will be performing at both shows.
