QUINCY — Jorge Trujillo, a 15-year veteran of the Quincy Police Department, was sworn in as the QPD captain during Quincy’s regular city council meeting Tuesday.

Family and friends took pictures and council members gave Trujillo a standing ovation after the swearing-in. His wife and children pinned on his new badge and captain’s bars.

Trujillo replaces Ryan Green, who was hired as QPD chief in March.

“It feels good, “ Trujillo said of his new position. “Hopefully I’ll be able to make a difference.”

Council members approved Trujillo’s contract on a unanimous vote and with no discussion.

“Anybody opposed?” asked deputy mayor Tom Harris, and there was no reply. “Didn’t think so.”

Before becoming a law enforcement officer, Trujillo served in the armed forces and recently earned a master's degree in criminal justice.

“(Trujillo) was our only applicant (for the position), because the department kind of rallied around,” Green said in an interview Wednesday.

Trujillo was a sergeant prior to taking the captain’s job, and Green said the officers he supervised were supportive of him.

“His team really appreciates what he does. The department appreciates what he does,” Green said.

At the QPD the captain is in charge of day-to-day department operations, managing patrol officers and detective investigations. The captain answers the questions that come up during the day, Green said.
