The Sandpoint Middle School girls and boys track and field team had multiple phenomenal performances at the district championship meet on Thursday, May 11, at Coeur d’Alene High School.

The eighth-grade girls dominated their competition by scoring 124 points to take home the title. The eighth-grade boys finished in seventh with 18 points. In the sixth and seventh grade division, Sandpoint girls took fourth place with 50 points and the boys placed fifth with 26 points.

The Sandpoint eighth-grade girls team was propelled by their depth in the mid-distance department. Izzy Waters, who broke the middle school records this season in the 1600-meter and 800-meter, placed first in both of those events with times of 5:37 and 2:33, respectively. Waters also placed second in the 400-meter dash behind teammate Elizabeth Storms, who ran a 1:03.78 to place first.

In the sprints, Sawyer Lee finished second with a time of 18.34 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. On the field, Marlee Lane took second in the shot put with a throw of 70-3. Vivian Haag took third in the long jump and high jump; she scored 18 points on the day in total. Bailey Majors placed third in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash to add on 12 more points.

For the sixth and seventh grade girls, standout seventh-grader Ruthie Laughridge posted the second fastest time in SMS history in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:37 to place second. Laughridge also placed second in the 800-meter run.

Willow Betz was the only Bullpup to take home gold on the day. In the high jump, she cleared the 4-6 mark which was well above her competitors.

For the eighth grade boys, Knox Williams and Trey Blumenberg led the way in sprints. Williams placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.88 seconds while Blumenberg took third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.94 seconds.

Damien Porter added on some points for the Bullpups in the discus throw by placing fifth with a throw of 99-3.

For the sixth and seventh grade boys, Miro Parr-Coffin led the way with a first-place finish in the 1600-meter run and a second-place finish in the 800-meter run. Parr-Coffin’s time of 5:12 in the 1600 was 12 seconds faster than the next finisher.

Seamus Burrato-Clarke rounded out the Bullpups' stellar performances with a throw of 27-4 in the shot put to place third in the district.
