LEGION BASEBALL: Lums rally in seventh for win at Missoula tourney

MISSOULA, Mont. — Trailing by a run heading into their final at-bat in a must-win tourney game, the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Badlands Badgers 18U of Alberta 6-5 at the season-opening Missoula Mavericks Memorial Day Tournament on Sunday at Ogren Park.
Jesse Brown singled in Eric Bumbaugh with the winning run for Coeur d’Alene (1-2).
“We’re hoping to build on it a little bit,” Lums coach Darren Taylor said. “The top of the order came through.”
Bryce Hall opened the seventh with a double for the Lums, and scored the tying run on a single by Bumbaugh. Joe DuCoeur singled to center, and a balk moved the runners up to second and third. Brown, who also earned the win in relief, followed with his game-winning hit to right field.
“All four hits were squared up perfectly,” Taylor said.
Bumbaugh finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Isaac Ziegler was 3 for 3 with an RBI triple in the fourth. Hall was 2 for 4 and singled in the game’s first run in the third.
Caden Robinett struck out four and walked one in five innings for the Lums. He gave up six hits and four runs — two earned.
“Caden Robinett looked really good, that was a good outing for him, his fastball was locating really well,” Taylor said.
The Lums close out round-robin play in the five-team tourney today at 11:30 a.m. PDT vs. the host Missoula Mavericks at Lindborg-Cregg Memorial Field, needing a win and possibly some help in the run-differential tiebreaker to advance to the championship game immediately following.
“We do have a chance,” Taylor said. “It’s the same formula we’ve used the last two years.”
In 2021 and ‘22, the Lums went 2-2 in round-robin play, and advanced to the title game via the tiebreaker. In ‘21, Coeur d’Alene lost to Helena in the title game; last year, the Lums beat Vauxhall for the title.
